HISTORY
Jensen Taber CornThe history of Jensen’s Taber Corn began over 35 years ago. It involved two Jensen families then and has grown into four Jensen families to date. The business began with growing 3 acres of two varieties of sweet corn that was handpicked by family members and placed into the back of half ton trucks bulk, and transported to the Crowsnest Pass and Calgary for sale. We also opened a small area on our farm for the public to drive to purchase corn. This procedure took place for a few years, and then expanded into 5 acres still handpicking the corn. We discovered that the public responded to our product more than expected so we once again expanded to 15 acres of corn still handpicked.Because of the demand for more fresh market corn from our farm we knew we had to make some upgrades, one being to invest in a one row corn picker. With this procedure the corn was picked being placed onto wagons that was then bagged on site in the fields into 5 dozen bags. All of the work was achieved by young and older family members.Over the past 15 years we have experimented with a number of varieties of super sweet corn. The purpose of trying new varieties is to see how well the varieties grow in the southern Alberta region. Corn grows best in well irrigated sandy soil with a lot of heat factors. All of our corn is grown with Alberta irrigation water.WE DO NOT GROW GMO CORN…genetically modified organism
We have expanded our business to provide fresh market corn, picked fresh daily, in over 28 retail locations in southern Alberta including the citys of Calgary,Olds,Strathmore,Chestermere. Jensen’s Taber Corn is now operating all of their own retail locations. We also supply to vendors in Edmonton. We also provided fresh corn to the public through vendors in B.C. and into Saskatchewan as well. We now package our corn in 4 dozen bags, making it much easier for the public to handle rather than a 5 dozen bag.PRICING IS SET AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH SEASON AND WILL NOT CHANGE FOR THAT PERIOD OF TIME.We now grow and harvest over 250 acres of fresh market corn to the public. To keep up with our production we are now picking the corn with a four row fresh market corn picker that does not damage the corn when being picked. We start in the early hours of the morning when the corn is cooled down from warm days. It is graded, packaged and shipped fresh each day.For larger orders we store the wrapped bagged corn into a large drive in cooler before it is shipped out onto cooled reefers on semi trucks.Because we have expanded so rapidly over the past 15 years, we now employ at the farm location over 50 people to help with our production and operations. Some still being original family members. Our best critic is the public. You inform us what varieties you enjoy eating fresh and for freezing. So over the past few years we have been successful in growing a large variety of super sweet yellow corn as well as bi-colored corn, better known as peaches and cream. Some of our best corn grown is a super sweet GOURMET corn, which has very small, tender, super sweet kernels, and is excellent for eating and freezing. Each year we try a new variety to test for our growing conditions and taste test. Our production season starts anywhere from the last weekend in July into the 2nd or 3rd week in September. These dates are all on condition with a good growing season. Corn is best grown with lots of heat and proper watering. DID YOU KNOW…….. that each kernel of corn is attached to a single silk of hair that feeds the kernel!!
